A Wedding at The Crawford · Naperville, Illinois

A Year in the Making

October 2025

Some of my favorite stories don't begin at a venue. This one began in a barber's chair.

I was getting a haircut at my friend's salon — he's a stylist, and his chair has heard half my life — when Michael sat down into my story. We talked the way people talk in those chairs: easily, about everything. Then he told me he followed my work. That he found it beautiful. And that for his wedding — still a full year away — my name was already at the top of his list.

A year. Most couples meet their photographer a few months before the day. Michael chose his over a haircut, twelve months early — and he never once wavered.

So the year became part of the wedding. He sent me photographs of the venue as the plans took shape. Notes from his wedding planner. Little surprises he was quietly preparing for Kevin. By the time I landed in Illinois, I wasn't a vendor walking in cold — I was someone who had been waiting for this day almost as long as they had.

The morning began at Hotel Arista; the wedding unfolded at The Crawford, in Naperville. And it was perfect — not the staged kind of perfect, the real kind. Two men who had planned every detail with intention, wrapped in a family that radiated joy. Kevin, calm and luminous. Michael, exactly as he had been in that chair: certain. I made close to five thousand frames that day, and every one of them felt easy.

The surprise was waiting at home. Downloading the day, I began to recognize faces in the crowd — faces I knew from screens, not from life. Among the guests were actors from one of my favorite series. One of them I had photographed all day — closely, beautifully — without ever realizing who she was. There were other greats of cinema in those frames, too, raising glasses at the toasts, dancing like anyone's favorite uncle.

I am grateful I didn't know. The camera must never change for a famous face. That day, everyone in my lens was simply someone Michael and Kevin love — and that is exactly how they deserved to be seen.

Truly, life is a surprise. Sometimes it sits you in a barber's chair, a year before one of the most beautiful weddings you will ever photograph, and hides movie stars in the guest list just to remind you: show up, pay attention, and photograph every person as if they matter — because they do.
